She has become a goth icon, and nowhere else do we see this more than on the red carpet. While the actress’s style has evolved over the years, her first appearance at the 1987 Oscars wasn’t her brightest fashion moment.
Helena chose a black Miss Selfridge dress that didn’t flatter her in any way. The frumpy style, oversized sleeves, odd length, and excessive tulle made it more Halloween than Academy Awards. Of course, the ’80s were full of fashion faux pas, so this one got a pass!
Charlize Theron Charlize Theron and Dior sound like a match made in fashion heaven. Both are elegance personified, and you can’t imagine the combination going wrong, except that it did! At the 2010 Academy Awards, Charlize showed up in a lilac Dior number, which was pretty standard, except for one tiny detail. The floral bodice swirls looked incredibly tacky, and the placement was just unfortunate. It made everyone do a double-take and wonder how Charlize of all people missed that embarrassing element. Oh well, at least she tried something risqué for once. Tyra Banks While it’s hard to imagine, even supermodels sometimes drop the ball when it comes to their fashion choices. Like the time Tyra Banks wore an outrageously purple gown by Vera Wang at the 2000 Academy Awards, and all everyone could think of was the sugar-plum fairy! The poufy dress may have worked for prom or as a princess costume, but seemed immature and out-of-place on the red carpet. Besides, Tyra is such a fierce and powerful personality that this was a total misfit. At least she ‘smized’ through it all.
Geena Davis Geena Davis may have won hearts with her splendid performance in ‘Thelma & Louise’, but she didn’t win any awards for her gown at the 1992 Oscars. Her black and white ruffled dress designed by Ruth Meyers and Bill Hargateat looked like something that belonged at a Las Vegas wedding than on the red carpet. The generous ruffles, gloves, and shiny fabric made the dress look cheap, and if you thought the front was bad, the back was even worse. The pretty lady, however, smiled through it all and seemed to really enjoy the night. After all, that’s all that matters!
